A Church Note From Hipps

Posted on 07:38 by john mical
Good Morning Travelers!

Yes Tahlib, that did help quite a bit.  It also made me realize I am still in the process of trying to get pregnant (oh boy, that could be taken a couple of ways...LOL) but I think you know what I mean.

As of late, I've not been attending services.  I pretty much use the beach as my 'spiritual time'.  There is a church I would love to try, it's called the Sunshine Cathedral, but I've yet to.  There always seems to be something going on, whether it be crew practice or the once-a-week opportunity to lay in bed past 5 am.  I know, no excuse, but I really wish the service was later as the church is about a 25-30 minute drive for me.   I've emailed a couple places of worship close to where I live, but they don't accept the LGBT community and therefore I don't accept them.  I know that's bad too, but after gayagenda all week long, I also need a break, and if I went into a church that started in, I would probably speak out.  I don't want to be in the local papers.

As far as the souvenir, that's sounds great.  I don't mean to be particular, but I've sent a picture to for you to use as a guide to help you make the right choice while picking my souvenir out.

Hope you're enjoying your vacation.  Vacations are great!

I'm going to New Orleans in August for a few days.  Should be good to get away.  I love the music and art scene there.

Talk to you soon!

James

No bother at all!. I am checking email in mornings just for reasons like this. The Hotlanta man I'm sending you is a bit young in body, but mature in mind. I hope that's fine (smile). So, how did my response to that statement about pregnancy work out for you? Also, thanks for the link to the chuch. Maybe you'll take us to it when we come visit. Where do you go now...if anywhere?

Thanks!

Sorry to bother you on vacation!  My bad!

Enjoy Atlanta!  Send me a souvenir...perhaps a beautiful Hotlanta man!

Hi James. We are great. We're on day 2 of vacation in Atlanta. My take away from that is that it's the gestation period vs. the delivery of the baby. Both spiritual growth and physical growth take a gestation period. That's my take away. Have a great day, we are off to downtown Atl.

Tahlib,

I used to attend this church called the Universal Truth Center and although I don't go anymore, because of how far away it is from where I live now, I still get emails.

This one is a thought for the day from the Rev. Mary Tumpkin that read:

"Pregnancy, whether physical or spiritual, is the means to an end—not the goal."

I don't get it.  Do you have any insight?

James

ps.  Sorry to be rude, should have asked first.  Hope you're doing well.

Lutheran Church (ELCA) Welcomes Gay Pastors

Posted on 22:17 by john mical
THE NEW YORK TIMES
By Laurie Goodstein

CALIFORNIA - “Today the church is speaking with a clear voice,” the Rev. Jeff R. Johnson, one of the seven gay pastors participating in the ceremony, said at a news conference just before it began. “All people are welcome here, all people are invited to help lead this church, and all people are loved unconditionally by God.”

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, known as the E.L.C.A., with 4.6 million members, is now the largest Protestant church in the United States to permit noncelibate gay ministers to serve in the ranks of its clergy — an issue that has caused wrenching divisions for it as well as for many other denominations.

Since the church voted last summer to allow noncelibate gay clergy members to serve, 185 congregations have taken the two consecutive votes required to leave the denomination, said Melissa Ramirez Cooper, a spokeswoman for the church, citing a tally that she said was updated monthly. There are 10,396 congregations nationwide.

The Episcopal Church and the United Church of Christ also allow gay ministers. And the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)’s general assembly voted at its convention earlier this month to do so, though the vote will become church law only if is ratified by a majority of the church’s 173 regional presbyteries. Two smaller Lutheran denominations, the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod and the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, do not ordain ministers in same-sex relationships. [link]

GEORGIA---Atlanta's St. John's Lutheran Church, organized in 1869, is the oldest Lutheran church in the city. The sanctuary, added on in 1969, is a contemporary octagonal shape representing the "eighth day of creation" (our new creation through our baptism into the death and resurrection of Jesus), was considered very contemporary in 1969" (How clever is that?). I met the recently reinstated "Gay" pastor, Brad Schmeling at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in 2008 as part of a community forum of gay discrimination in the church. We’ll be there tomorrow.

(Mark 3:31-34) Love Makes a Family

Posted on 12:21 by john mical
When Jesus revealed to his family that he was different and that he had a special mission in life, they did not understand. When his parents found Jesus in the Temple, they were surprised and said exactly what a lot of parents say to gay children when they come out: "How could you do this to us! We have been looking for you sorrowing (lit. "in great pain")." Jesus did not apologize to his parents for "coming out" and acting on who he really was. He simply said that he had to be his true self and left it at that. While we must keep the 4th Commandment, "Honor thy Mother & thy Father," we do not have a similar obligation for other family members distinct from our community as a whole. Even in Matthew 8:21-22 when "Another of the disciples said to Jesus, Sovereign, let me first go and bury my father." Jesus responded, "Follow me; and let the dead bury the dead." When we consider who is our family, we should consider what Christ said about his own, asking, "Who are my mother and my brothers?" And looking about on those who were sitting around him Jesus said, "Look! Here are my mother and my brothers [his closely selected friends]." (Mark 3:31-34).

Israel's Museum Re-design

Posted on 09:00 by john mical
On Monday, with a collection of over 500,000 pieces, the Israel Museum in Jerusalem opens its "renewed" campus with a new design. The Museum has been the crown jewel of this country’s cultural heritage for over 45-years. It is a combination natural history museum (with a heel bone pierced by an iron nail with wood fragments, the world’s only physical evidence of crucifixion); a history museum (with an encyclopedic collection of Judaica); and an art museum with an exceptional group of Modernist artworks. Exhibit: State of Judea | Online

A college graduates controversial final project has Israel's religious community up in arms (as usual). The student, Yossi Even-Kama is graduating from Shenkar College of Engineering and Design. According to Y-NetNews.com, his work, "State of Judea", which has been posted on Facebook and picked up by various religious websites, is a fictional depiction of the gradual death of Israeli democracy in the years 2020-2023 and the establishment of a religious, anti-democratic state in its place." David LaChapelle's "American Jesus" AKA Michael Jackson

Posted on 08:57 by john mical
THE COMPLEX
By Bradley Carborne
The video director/uber-photographer David LaChapelle—known in our world for images like the Lil' Kim/LV print photo, the shot from VIBE of Tupac in the bathtub, and for being the mind behind Christina Aguilera's "Dirty" video—opened his new exhibition " American Jesus" at New York's Paul Kasmin Gallery last night.

As expected, the work on display is all pretty crazy and highly fuckwitable. Highlights include the photographer's final photo shoot with Michael Jackson, a series in which the singer is portrayed as a Biblical martyr. If you come to NYC at all this summer, put this on your checklist, since the exhibit runs through September 18. But if you're not here yet, hit the jump to see the photos on display at the exhibit. Decaying American Churches

Posted on 09:00 by john mical
In Cincinnati, OH and in cities across the nation, older churches closed this weekend. They are congregations  struggling in aging, decaying churches. In Raleigh, NC, chunks of the ceiling fall during services and members are rushed to safety. It's a problem in older cities every where. "A lot of these churches have shrunk from 500 members to 100 members, or from 800 members to 200 members," said Robert Jaeger, executive director of the Partnership for Sacred Places. "They look at the trend lines and they see the decline in membership and wonder, 'Gosh', in 10 or 15 years are we going to be gone?"

First Christian Assembly of God

Posted on 11:41 by john mical
www.fcacincinnati.org

Pastor Brandon Wilkes topic was Sight vs Vision. "Vision" is living in faith; believing what will come about through God. "Sight" is being held back by the doubts and obstacles of what we see before us. God gave the followers of Moses a vision of a new Land. They were excited but what they "saw" (big enemies) made them doubt the vision. God's response was that those men would never live in that great land. And it was so, the land was settled by "other" men who lived for the Vision + and not the Sight.

THE CALL of ABRAM:
(Gen 12:1-3)

The Lords had said to Abrham, "Leave your country, your people, and your father's household and go to the land I will show you.

I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you;

I will make your name great, and you will be blessing.

I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse;

and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you."

OTHER NOTES:
Attendance: Renee, Mike, Camille (and kids); Greg, Mom and me.

I asked for prayer. Six people laid hands on me. I felt great heat. Power of God.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS:

+ Sister, Mike and Camille were there.

+ Six people laid hands on me for prayer. I needed prayers to guide me on recommending whether A&O, Inc would be a for-profit or non-profit? I felt hot power.

+ Met Pastor Jeff's wife.

+ Stood for 30 minutes of music. At least it was good music.

Anti-Christian Art at Library

Posted on 09:00 by john mical
The conservative legal defense group, Pacific Justice Institute has demanded that art in an exhibit in a California library be removed. The mixed-media art is titled "Moral Values" and is part of a 63-piece exhibit that opened in the Sacramento County Public Law Library last month.
The News Observer quotes: "The purpose of the message is to directly attack and demean the foundation of the Christian faith," said Brad Dacus, president of the group. "If this had been another faith, there would be outrage." Following on the heals of last week's court decision in Russia, where the two curators were convicted of religious hate-speech, the exhibition is bound to generate lots of attention. Maybe we'll even get a sense of whether the art is any good. (Read: Article)

Leonardo da Vinci’s "Virgin of the Rocks" will goe back on display at London's National Gallery on July 14th, after an 18-month restoration project. The work was commissioned in 1483 by the Milanese Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception, and was intended to form part of their oratory altarpiece but took 25 years before installation in the chapel. The Gap

Posted on 09:39 by john mical
By Pastor Miner

He begans with story of the prodigal son and his celebrated return by his father.

St. Paul says we all have evil habits but in our relationship with God, we can change. What does it take? Is it that easy? No. There is gap between our aspirations and our actions. Today's lesson is from The Book of Romans.

Romans 6, 7 and 8 reveals St. Pauls delimena of the "Gap" saying "I do not do what I want, but I do the very things I hate..." (v. 7:15,18). Why do we struggle if we've accepted the gift of Christ? The answer is that just because we have a gift, doesn't mean we know how to use it. A gift does us no good if we don't use it. How do we activate that gift?

In Roman 8:5, "....those who live according to the Spirit, set their minds on the things of the Spirit." If I want to live happily, I have to make up my mind--focusing my energy on positve things of God. Ghandi said, "Watch your thoughts ... for it becomes your destiny."

Bottom-line, if I don't like where I am, I must change what I am doing that creates my current mind-set. Three things about my mindset that I want to change are:

A) Fearing Sickness vs embracing health;

B) Ignoring the uncomfortable vs reacting to resolve; and

C) Responding to anger with anger vs love.

Past Jeff said set your mind on things of the spirit vs the flesh and activate my gift. He offered the following three ways to activate my gift:

7 Options:

---------------

1) Daily devotion

2) Listen to Christian Music

3) Memorize one Bible verse per week

4) Get regular at Sunday worship

5) Upgrade your friends

6) Select a Service Opportunity

7) Share your money. Jesus said, "where you invest your money, their your spirit will follow."

That is key to activating my gift. Past Jeff gave us a prayer for today, which in short says, Mother/Father/God, I have filled my Spirit with crude that I need your help to flush out." Nice prayer. Nice activation plan.

Realist painter, and Mormon Religious Artist, Arnold Friberg dead at 96

Posted on 09:00 by john mical
THE NEW YORK TIMES

UTAH -- Arnold Friberg, a widely popular artist of historical and religious scenes whose painstaking quest for stunning realism led him to Valley Forge, Pa., on a winter’s day to paint what became a famous portrait of George Washington praying in the snow, died Thursday in Salt Lake City. He was 96. His series of paintings of events in the Book of Mormon, the sacred text of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has been reproduced millions of times. A high point for Mr. Friberg was his being selected by the legendary director Cecil B. DeMille to create 15 historical paintings to serve as models for scenes, props and costumes for the movie spectacle “The Ten Commandments.”  [link]

Dali, the Catholic | Atlanta

Posted on 04:00 by john mical
HIGH - One of Dalí's most famous images,"Christ of St. John of the Cross"(1951) portrays the crucified Christ on the cross from a striking angle, looking down from above. Dalí described the image as having come to him in a dream, in which he envisioned Christ as the atomic nucleus. Religious iconography became prevalent in Dalí's work following his conversion to Catholicism in the 1940s. (View Source)

Atkins Life Plan

Posted on 07:03 by john mical
In the Atkins Life Plan, our objective is to eat as many "good" carbs as possible and to cut our virtually all "bad" carbs. This means no conventional bread (like we bought 3 loaves of last night), baked goods (like chocolate chip cookies or brownies), and pasta and nothing made with sugar (rootbeer). Even nutritious carb foods like brown rice (we both like), lentils (okay), and sweet potatos (we both like enough) will be off menu until close to goal weight.

There are 4 phases:

  • #1 (14 days) INDUCTION (Ketosis) 20g of net carbs daily: meats and salad only (no cheese)
  • #2 (7 day cycles) OWL (Ongoing Weight Loss) Add 5g per day and eat cheese, berries, nuts and seeds (maybe even legumes). Once we stop losing weight, which is around 40-60g daily we'll know how many carbs we can eat daily to maintain weight.
  • #3 PM (Pre-Maintenance) Each week as another 10g daily or 20-30 twice a week.
  • #4 LM (Lifetime Maintenance) You've achieved your goal weight and eat what you want but limit it to 45-100 carbs per day; just skip junk food. Also do 60-min of exercise daily.

Madonna Sold for $5.3M

Posted on 04:00 by john mical
After two weeks of art auctions that have yielded uneven results in London, Christie’s Old Master and 19th century paintings, drawings, and watercolors sale put in a solid effort. For instance, Giovani Bellini’s Madonna and Child in a Landscape, which edged out its 2.5–3.5 million estimate with the addition of the buyer’s premium, selling for $5.3 million, an all-time high for the artist at auction. A&O Meetup: North Christian Church | Columbus, IN

ALPHA OMEGA ARTS
By Ernest Disney-Britton
INDIANA - In 1964, the Disciples of Christ (DoC) opened this world class "Gods Art Museum" designed by Eero Saarinen. It's a beautifully focused and accessible modern place to worship that is rich with biblical symbolism and warm despite being built from concrete and steel. I worshiped at North Christian Church in Columbus, Indiana last weekend and would love to go back. The hexagonal shape is symbolic of the Star of David. The Communion Table consists of 13 wooden tables--one for each apostle and a large one for Christ. The Oculus shines moon light right down onto the altar and is a reminder that, "We are Christian, but we are not the only Christians." Having never been to a DoC service, I felt service had a very Catholic feel to the liturgy including the weekly sacrament of the eucharist (communion) but unlike the Roman Catholic Church, Tolerance.org says that DoC are a "liberal Protestant Christian denomination that has been slowly transitioning...to an acceptance of GLBT's and promotion of their civil rights in society."

Jesus Statue Restored | Brazil

Posted on 09:00 by john mical
Rio de Janeiro's Christ the Redeemer statue is back in all its glory after a $4 million renovation. Restoration on the 125-foot-tall monument began in April to fix small cracks and fungal damage and remove spray-painted graffiti. The 79-year-old statue, which stands atop the 2,300-foot-high Corcovado mountain overlooking Rio's white-sand beaches, was covered in scaffolding while some 100 workers undertook the restoration.

Da Vinci Tribute | Orlando

Posted on 10:00 by john mical
ORLANDO SENTINEL - Many people may not know, but the Mary Queen of the Universe Shrine (8300 Vineland Avenue, 407-239-6600) has an art gallery where religious art by national and international artists is presented. One such artist is our own Edson Campos, who is well known for his highly rendered figurative paintings. Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m. he will be onhand for the unveiling of his tribute to Leonardo da Vinci's "Last Supper" (June 26-August 22). Campos' interiors are grand and atmospheric, and his very realistically rendered figures possess an ethereal grace.
